In spite of the anti-corruption drive by President Mohammadu Buhari
administration and several warnings by the Inspector General of police,
Mr. Solomon Arase on policemen to stop demanding and collecting money
from motorists as such action belittle them and the force, policemen on
duty at night in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State are still extorting money from
keke operators at night.
Investigations by The Sensor reporter
revealed that policeman stationed at strategic locations within Uyo city
have made it a habit to come out to the road from 9pm in the night and
extort money from tricycle operators. The policemen who are usually
armed with guns have been seen flagging down tricycle operators as if
they want to check their particulars and would deliberately delay the
keke man with passengers until the keke operator pays N50.
Aggrieved
keke operators who spoke to our reporter on condition of anonymity said
most night they spent up to N500 depending on how many times they pass
through such road check points.
They lamented that the activities of
the policemen have discouraged many of their colleagues from plying the
road up to 9pm while others that do it select the roads they convey
passengers to within the town. It was gathered that the police patrol
team located near the university of Uyo main gate, Ikpa road by CCC
junction, Abak road by Uniuyo teaching hospital, Uyo village road among
other areas have virtually abandoned their primary duty to extort money
from keke operators at night with impunity.
Worried by this
development same tricycle operators in Uyo who narrated their experience
have appealed to the state commissioner of police to call these erring
police personnel to order.
They have also called on the leadership
of tricycle operators in the state to intervene in the matter to stop
more tricycle operators from withdrawing their services at night in Uyo.
